Why you cannot go alone

The DMZ sits inside a controlled border area, so independent entry is not allowed. There is no public ticket gate and no way to drive in and pay. Every visitor passes through military checkpoints, and only approved operators can bring groups across. This is not a marketing rule, it is how access to the zone works. Booking a tour is therefore the first and only practical step.

Step by step to a visit

The process is straightforward once you know it. Pick a departure, prepare your documents and show up on time.

  • Choose a tour, half day for the core sites or full day for the full picture
  • Book a few days ahead, earlier for weekends and any JSA add on
  • Bring your original passport, the single most important item
  • Meet in central Seoul in the morning, most tours start early
  • Follow your guide at the checkpoints and photo limits

Getting there and timing

The checkpoints are about one hour north of central Seoul, so tours leave early to make the most of the day. Transport is included, which removes the hassle of finding your own way to a border area with no public access. Expect 5 to 6 hours for a half day and 8 to 9 for a full day.

What to expect at the border

The mood is calm and orderly rather than tense. You will walk part of an infiltration tunnel, look into North Korea from an observatory, and see monuments to a divided peninsula. Photography is fine in most spots but restricted in others, and your guide will tell you where. Treat it with respect. This is a place people still hope to see reunited, not a theme park.

Preguntas frecuentes

Yes. The DMZ is a controlled military zone and independent entry is not permitted. You must join an approved guided tour that clears you through the checkpoints. There is no way to buy a general entry ticket and walk in on your own.

You need your original passport for the checkpoint, since a photo or copy is not accepted. Bring comfortable shoes, warm layers for the exposed viewpoints and some cash in won. Check your tour rules for any dress code, especially for JSA options.

Book a few days ahead for a general DMZ tour and more for weekends. Any JSA option needs earlier booking and can be suspended, so confirm current status before you plan around it.
